Headlight haze

Car polish clears light haze, then the sun brings it back

Polish fixes the surface. Yellowed lenses need sanding, and every lens needs a UV seal. Headlight restoration is AED 149 for both lenses.

Can car polish clean headlights?

Yes, car polish can clean headlights with light haze, and only for a while. A car polish removes a very thin skin of dull plastic and brings clarity back to lenses that are cloudy but not yet yellow. It does nothing for deep yellowing, and it puts nothing back to stop the sun undoing the work. For lenses that have already turned, the job is sanding, polishing and sealing, which is our headlight restoration at AED 149 for both lenses.

The real question behind the search is usually whether a bottle of polish and ten minutes will save a booking. Sometimes it will. This page shows you how to tell which case you have before you spend the ten minutes.

Why car polish can clean headlights only some of the time

A new headlight lens is polycarbonate with a thin UV-resistant coating on the outside. Under Dubai sun that coating is the first thing to give. At first the surface only roughens, which scatters light and looks milky or grey. That stage lives in the top layer, and a polish can level it.

Leave it a few more summers and the plastic underneath oxidises and turns amber. Now the damage is deeper than a polish is built to cut. You can rub for an hour and the lens will look cleaner and still yellow, because the colour is in the plastic, not on it.

How can you tell if polish will clean headlights like yours?

Wash the lens and dry it, then look at it in daylight with two quick checks. Wet it with a splash of water: if it turns clear for a moment and goes cloudy again as it dries, the problem is surface roughness, which is the polishable kind. If it stays yellow or amber while wet, the colour is in the plastic and polish alone will not reach it.

Then check where it starts. Haze that begins on the edges facing the sun and creeps inward is the classic pattern. Moisture or condensation on the inside of the lens is a different fault, a failed seal, and no amount of polishing the outside will touch it.

What happens when you polish headlights and skip the seal?

The lens looks good that evening, and it is bare. The factory coating that blocked UV was already gone, which is why it hazed in the first place, and polishing removes whatever was left of it. Bare polycarbonate in direct sun can start clouding again within months, faster on a car that sleeps outside.

This is the step that separates a polish from a restoration. After the lens is cleared we seal it with a UV-resistant product that stands in for the lost coating. If you do the polish yourself, a sealant on top is not optional. Our guide to headlight ceramic coating explains why a paint ceramic is the wrong product for that coat.

Paint polish is the wrong tool for most lenses

Not usually. Paint compounds are made for cured clear coat on metal, and plastic reacts differently to heat and friction. A machine used the way it is on a bonnet can warm a lens unevenly or mark the plastic. A hand compound can lift a light milky film from a lens that is still mostly clear, and that is about its limit.

When we do the job, the surrounding paint is taped off, the lens is wet-sanded through finer grades to remove the burnt layer, polished back to clear by machine and then sealed. All of it happens with the lenses on the car, at your address.

Does our car polishing service include the headlights?

No. Car polishing from AED 799 corrects the paint. The lenses are plastic and get their own treatment, Headlight Restoration at AED 149, which you can add to any visit or book alone. If the paint and the lamps both look tired, the Full Detail from AED 999 covers the paint polish and the interior, and the lenses join the same visit as an add-on.

Should you try a polish at home first?

Try it only when the wet test says the lens is milky, not amber, and the lens is otherwise clean and dry inside. Tape the paint, work the polish by hand in small circles, wipe clean and check in daylight. Then seal it the same day. Stop if the lens turns streaky, if you feel the plastic warm up, or if the amber tint is still there after a few minutes.

If you reach that point, you have lost nothing but ten minutes, and the lens is no worse for the attempt. A photo on WhatsApp is the cheaper way to find out first.

When is polishing not the answer at all?

Three cases. Water droplets inside the lens mean a failed seal or vent and need a workshop. A lens with cracks or a peeling surface layer has lost material no polish can replace. And a lens with deep pitting from years of road debris can be improved but will not return to new. In each case we say so before any work, rather than sell you a polish that cannot work.

Quick answers

Polishing headlights, answered

Can I use my car's paint polish on the headlights?

On a lens that is only lightly milky, a gentle hand polish can help for a short time. On a yellowed lens it will not, and it removes the last of the UV coating either way, so the lens needs a sealant afterwards.

How long will a polished headlight stay clear?

Without a UV seal, it can start clouding again within months in direct sun. With the lens sanded, polished and sealed, it lasts far longer, and a car parked under cover keeps the result longest.

Does wax protect headlights after polishing?

Only briefly. Wax wears off quickly in the heat and is not made to block UV on plastic. A proper lens sealant is the right finish, as set out on our waxing versus polishing page for paint.

My headlights are yellow, not cloudy. Is polish enough?

No. Yellow means the plastic itself has oxidised, so the burnt layer has to be sanded off first. That is the Headlight Restoration service at AED 149 for both lenses.

Can the headlights be done at the same visit as a wash?

Yes. Headlight Restoration is an add-on to any package, such as the Premium Wash from AED 249, and it also books on its own.

Not sure if polish will do it?

Send one photo of each headlight in daylight. The reply says whether a polish is enough or the lens needs restoring.
