Paint Protection Film

8 to 10 years, and the edges decide it

What keeps paint protection film clear and sealed in Dubai heat, and what ends it early.

How long does paint protection film last in Dubai?

How long does paint protection film last? Properly fitted film lasts 8 to 10 years on a car that is washed by hand, and closer to 5 to 7 where the car lives in direct sun and gets a weekly brush-tunnel wash. The film itself rarely gives up first. The usual cause of an early end is an edge that lifted in year two, or a roll that was cheap to begin with.

What decides how long paint protection film lasts?

Four things, in rough order of weight: the quality of the roll, the skill of the fitter, where the car is parked, and how it is washed. A top-grade urethane film with a clear topcoat is built to resist yellowing and to heal light swirls with a little heat. A budget film can look identical on the day it is fitted and go amber by the second summer.

Fitting matters just as much. Film that is stretched over a curve without enough relaxing, or tucked at an edge with dust underneath, lifts from that point first. Once an edge lifts, dirt works in underneath and the damage spreads panel by panel. That is why the fitting conditions on the PPF service page ask for a controlled, dust-free space before anything is cut.

Does Dubai sun change how long film lasts?

It shortens the life of weak film and barely touches good film. Summer surface temperatures on a dark bonnet go well past what most countries ever see, and every cheap adhesive and topcoat finds its limit there. Quality film is tested for exactly that heat, so the sun is a reason to pay attention to the brand on the roll, not a reason to skip film.

What the sun does do to any film is show up the weak spots. A small bubble that would sit quiet in a cool climate can grow in July. Tell the fitter where the car is parked and they will plan the edge wrapping around it.

How should you wash a car with film to keep it for years?

Hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and a clean microfibre mitt, and rinse before you touch the panel. Skip brush tunnels and skip petrol-station jet washes that use harsh degreaser. Keep a pressure washer at least 30 cm from any edge and never aim it along one.

After the first fitting give the film a few days to settle before the first wash. Small moisture pockets clear by themselves as the adhesive cures, so a hazy patch in week one is normal and not a fault.

What are the signs that film is coming to the end of its life?

Yellowing is the first one, usually seen against a white or silver panel. Next comes a rough, orange-peel texture where the topcoat has broken down, then lifted corners and dirt lines along the edges. Light swirls that no longer heal in the sun mean the self-healing layer is spent.

Any one of these is worth a look. Two together mean the film has done its work and the paint underneath is still clean, which is the entire point of having had it.

What happens when the film has to come off

On original factory paint, professionally fitted film comes off with heat and patience and leaves the paint as it was on the day of fitting, with the same gloss. Resprayed panels are different, because the new paint may not bond as firmly, so tell the fitter about any repaint history before the first quote. A fresh film can go on straight afterwards, and that is the point at which many owners switch from a front-end fit to full body.

Whether film pays back on a car you keep a few years

Often yes if the car is financed or will be sold, because chip-free paint is what a buyer sees first. If you are on a short lease, a regular hand wash and a detail before the return is the better money. The PPF worth it page works through the cases, and film versus coating covers the choice if lifespan is your main concern. Film starts from AED 3,999 at Apex Core, and the exact figure depends on the car and the coverage you pick.

Film lifespan questions

Can film be repaired if one corner lifts?

A small lifted edge caught early can often be re-laid. Left alone, dirt works under it and the whole panel eventually needs redoing, so send a photo as soon as you spot one.

Does film last longer on the front end than on the whole car?

Not by itself. The film is the same, but the bonnet and bumper take the heat and the grit, so they show age first. Side panels in the shade tend to look new for longer.

Will the film yellow in Dubai?

Cheap film can, usually within two to three summers. Quality film with a stable topcoat is made to resist it. Ask which film is going on before you book, not after.

Can you put a ceramic coating over the film?

Yes. A coating over film makes it easier to rinse clean, and it is a sensible add-on for cars that sit in open sun.

How do I check my film at home?

Look along every edge in direct light for lifting or dark dirt lines, then check a white panel for any amber tint. If either shows, send us a photo on WhatsApp.
