Polish, mark by mark

Can car polishing remove scratches? Depends on what made the mark

Swirls, wash marring and sprinkler rings come out. A scratch that catches your nail does not. Machine polishing is from AED 799.

Can car polishing remove scratches?

Car polishing can remove scratches that sit in the clear coat, which in practice means swirl marks, wash marring, light scuffs and sprinkler rings. It does not remove a scratch that has gone through the clear coat to the colour or primer. Our machine car polishing starts at AED 799, and the same polish is already inside the AED 999 Full Detail.

The useful question is not whether polishing works but what made your mark. A scratch has a source, and the source tells you its depth. Below is the list we see most on cars in Dubai, with what a polish does to each.

Does polishing remove swirl marks from automatic car washes?

Yes, and this is the job polishing does best. Brush tunnels and dirty wash mitts drag grit across the paint in thousands of hairline arcs. Each one is shallow, so the polish levels the clear coat around it until the arc has no edge left. On a black or dark grey car in direct sun, the difference is what you notice from across the car park.

Polishing out marks from wiping a dusty car

Usually. Sand in Dubai is hard, and a dry cloth over a dusty bonnet turns it into sandpaper. The result is fine straight lines in the direction you wiped. They are scratches in the strict sense, but they are shallow, and a single-stage polish normally takes them out. Wipe dust with water and a clean mitt next time, or let our hand mobile car wash do it.

Can polishing remove scratches behind the door handles?

Mostly, yes. The half-moon marks under a handle come from fingernails and rings, and they are shallow. A keyed line or a tight, deep gouge near the handle is a different matter, and that is where the nail test below decides it.

Can polishing remove bird dropping or water spot marks?

It can when the damage is a shallow etch. Droppings and hard water dry in the heat and eat a pale ring into the clear coat. If you can still feel the ring as a dip, the polish has to take more of the layer to level it, and a very deep etch can stay faintly visible. We say so from photos before we start, rather than polishing one spot until the paint thins.

How can I tell if a polish will take my scratch out?

Wash the panel, dry it, and draw a fingernail across the mark at a right angle. The result sorts nearly every scratch into one of three groups.

What your nail doesWhat it meansWhat polishing does
Glides over itIn the clear coatLevels it, usually gone
Catches slightlyAt the base of the clear coatMuch fainter, may stay visible
Drops into itThrough to colour or primerSoftens the edges, does not fill it

For a mark in the middle group, our polishing stages guide explains when a second stage is worth it. For one that drops in, see what detailing and scratches, because the next step there is paint, not more polishing.

Is a polished scratch really gone, or just filled?

Gone. A polish cuts away a thin layer of clear coat until the surface is level with the bottom of the mark. Nothing is added, so there is nothing to wash out in a month. That is the difference from a cheap scratch-filler wax, which hides the mark for a few washes and then lets it reappear.

It also means the clear coat is a finite resource. A good detailer measures what the paint can give and stops, which is why we ask for photos in sunlight first. The wax route is covered in our waxing versus polishing comparison.

What a polish visit looks like at your address

We wash and clay the car first, because polishing over bonded dirt only moves it around. Then we inspect each panel under a bright lamp, which shows marks the sun hides at noon, and agree with you which ones are worth chasing. The machine work follows, panel by panel, with the surface wiped and checked between passes.

A basement bay or a shaded driveway is enough. The polish needs shade more than space, since a hot panel dries the product too fast. If your car is parked in direct summer sun all day, tell us on WhatsApp and we will fit the visit to the cooler end of the day.

Should I polish before ceramic coating if I have scratches?

Yes. A coating seals in whatever is on the paint, scratches included, so the polish comes first. Our ceramic coating starts at AED 1,999 and is applied after the paint is corrected.

Before you book

Polishing and scratches, answered

Can car polish get rid of scratches?

It removes the ones in the clear coat, such as swirls and light marks. A scratch that catches your nail or shows primer will be softer after polishing but not gone.

Can car polish remove small scratches?

Yes. Small scratches that your nail glides over are the ideal case, and a single-stage machine polish normally levels them.

Does car polishing remove scratches permanently?

Yes. The polish levels the clear coat rather than filling the mark, so it does not come back after washing. New scratches can of course still happen.

How much does a machine polish cost?

Machine polishing starts at AED 799. It is also part of the AED 999 Full Detail, so a car that needs the cabin cleaned as well costs little extra.

Can I polish the scratch myself?

You can try a hand polish on a shallow mark. Hand work rarely levels more than the faintest swirl, and a machine does the same job evenly across the panel.

Send the scratch in direct sun

A close photo and one of the whole panel. The reply says whether a polish will level it before anything is booked.
