Ceramic Coating
From AED 1,999, both packages beat bare paint. Here's what actually decides whether yours reaches month 18 or year 5.
How long does ceramic coating last?
How long does ceramic coating last in Dubai? A cared-for ceramic coating lasts 2 to 5 years, and which end of that range you land on depends far more on the package and the wash routine than on the product itself. The 2-year coating is a genuine 2-year seal when it is left alone; push it through weekly automatic washes and harsh degreasers and it can fade to a shadow of itself inside 12 to 18 months. The 5-year coating survives the same abuse longer simply because it starts thicker, not because it is immune to it.
Both packages start from AED 1,999 and include the same machine polish beforehand, so the choice is not really about price, it is about how much margin you want against this climate. The 5-year coating uses a harder, thicker-cured layer that shrugs off UV and mineral deposits for longer before it needs a top-up; the 2-year coating still beads and self-cleans well but hands the paint back to bare exposure sooner. Neither tier is permanent, and neither survives neglect at the rate the name suggests.
| Wash routine | 2-year coating | 5-year coating |
|---|---|---|
| Regular hand or contactless washing | Reaches close to the full 2 years | Reaches close to the full 5 years |
| Weekly automatic tunnel washes | Often thins by 12-18 months | Often thins by year 3 |
| Left with no maintenance wash at all | Visibly faded within a year | Visibly faded within 2-3 years |
What destroys ceramic coating?
Four things do most of the damage in the UAE: automatic tunnel washes with spinning brushes that grind grit against the surface, petrol-station jet washes using whatever degreaser is cheapest that week, weeks of direct sun with no rinse to clear off bonded dust, and hard tap water left to dry on the panel instead of being dried off by hand. Any one of these alone barely registers against a cured coating. Combined and repeated weekly, they can strip years off a coating rated for five.
The heat itself is less of a threat than people assume, the coating is cured to handle UAE summer on its own. What it is not built to shrug off is chemistry: strong degreasers, clay bar overuse, and compound polish passing over a coated panel by mistake all remove coating faster than a full year of sun does.
Hard tap water is the quiet one. Dubai's supply carries enough dissolved mineral content that a panel left to air-dry after a rinse gets a fine layer of spots baked on by the next afternoon's sun. On bare paint that is a cosmetic annoyance a polish removes. On a coating, repeated mineral bonding slowly dulls the hydrophobic top layer that makes water bead in the first place, so the coating is technically still there while doing less and less of its job. A microfibre dry-off after every wash, not just the ones before a drive, is the single habit that buys a coating the most extra months.
A pH-neutral shampoo and a two-bucket hand wash do the least damage per wash of any method available, which is why owners who stick to that routine consistently get the full package life out of either tier. A contactless foam wash is the acceptable middle ground when a hand wash is not practical. Automatic brush tunnels are the one method that actively works against the coating on every single pass, the brushes pick up grit from the car ahead of you and drag it across yours. If a tunnel wash is the only realistic option most weeks, that alone is a reason to lean toward the 5-year tier rather than the 2-year one, since it simply has more coating to give up before it is gone.
Is ceramic coating permanent?
No. Even the 5-year coating is a sacrificial layer, not a permanent paint upgrade: it is built to wear down in your paint's place and needs replacing once it does. Any installer who tells you a coating never needs redoing is selling you the phrase, not the product. What is true is that the paint underneath stays protected the whole time, because the moment the coating thins past its job, a fresh application restarts the clock rather than repairing anything.
Does ceramic coating wear off?
Gradually, almost always. A coating does not flake off or vanish in a week, it thins in stages: weaker beading first, then slower water sheeting, then a duller finish under direct light. The one exception is chemical damage, a strong degreaser or an aggressive clay bar pass can strip a patch of coating in one session, which is why patchiness on one or two panels usually points to a specific wash, not general age.
Three signs arrive before the coating is fully gone, usually in this order. Water stops beading tightly and starts sheeting flat instead. Dust and brake dust start clinging rather than rinsing off in one pass. The paint looks a shade duller under direct sun even right after a wash. Any one of those alone is worth watching. Two together mean the coating has thinned past doing its job, and a top-up now is cheaper than a full correction later, because the paint underneath is still protected rather than already swirled or etched.
The easiest way to check is a five-minute test in direct sun rather than guessing from memory. Rinse a panel with plain water and watch how it leaves the surface: tight, marble-sized beads that roll off on their own mean the coating still has real life left. Water that spreads into a flat sheet, or beads that sit and slowly flatten instead of rolling, means the hydrophobic layer has already thinned. Run that same check on a bonnet, a roof and a boot lid, since the panels that catch the most sun and the most dust wear fastest and usually show the first signs weeks before the rest of the car does.
Coating lifespan questions
Yes, if the base coat has not failed completely a maintenance top-up restores the beading and gloss without a full correction. We check the coating's condition on-site and tell you honestly whether it needs a top-up or a fresh application.
It is one of the fastest ways to do it. Petrol-station jet washes use whatever degreaser is on hand that day, and repeated exposure strips a coating faster than sun or heat alone ever would.
Only with reasonable care. Five years is the realistic ceiling under normal washing, not a guarantee against weekly tunnel washes or months without a single maintenance rinse.

No, it protects against chemical and UV damage, not impact. PPF is the layer for stone chips and scratches, and the two can be combined, as covered on our coating vs PPF page.
