Does ceramic coating make a difference? Check it yourself

Whether ceramic coating can make a difference is something you test, not take on trust. A coating is a thin polymer layer that cures on top of the clear coat. You cannot see it, so the proof has to come from how the car behaves. Five behaviours are worth watching, and none of them needs equipment.

What should you check on a coated car?

Does ceramic coating make a difference to water?

Bare clear coat lets water spread into a flat film. In Dubai that film is often hose water or sprinkler spray, and it dries into the mineral rings that etch paint over a season. Coated paint pulls the same water into beads, and on a flat panel it runs off in a sheet. Beading is the easiest test and the least important one. What counts is whether it still happens in month six, so keep checking after the first rain has long gone.

Does the car really stay cleaner?

Not in the sense of attracting less dust. Every car in this emirate gets a layer overnight, coated or not. The difference is how the dust is held. On coated paint it sits on the surface and a rinse lifts most of it. On bare paint it bonds with traffic film and old wax residue, and the only way off is rubbing, which is where swirl marks come from. So the car is not cleaner. It is easier to clean without damaging it.

How much easier is the next wash?

This is the check owners notice first, because it costs them effort or money every week. Fewer passes, lighter pressure, less product. If you wash at home you feel it in your own arms. Is the gloss from the coating or from the polish?

This question decides whether you feel a difference at all. Much of the wow on handover day is the machine polish taking out swirls and restoring depth. The coating then seals that corrected finish in and keeps it from dulling. Coat over swirled paint and you seal the swirls in, which is why the polish is part of the price and never an extra. What does a coating not change?

It does not stop stone chips, trolley dings or key scratches. Anything with mass and speed goes straight through a layer that thin, whatever a sales video suggests. Where a coating will not make a difference

Someone whose car sleeps in a covered basement, gets washed a few times a year and goes back to a leasing company next spring. The coating still works on that car. The owner just never collects enough of what it gives. If that sounds like you, the worth it test is a better place to start than a booking.

Questions to ask before booking a coating

Four questions separate a proper job from a quick one. Is the machine polish included in the quoted price, or added later? Which package is being applied, the 2-year or the 5-year, and what separates them? Where will the car cure, and for how long should it stay dry?
